A well designed curriculum aimed at excellent academic performance and overall development of the students is implemented with total commitment.
The choice of teaching method used depends largely on the information or skill that is being taught and it may also be influenced by the aptitude and enthusiasm of the students. Keeping this in mind various teaching methodologies are adopted to make the teaching effective and interesting for the students. The teaching methodologies include:-
Well prepared lectures are being delivered by the teachers with the help of appropriate audio visual aids that not only holds the attention of the students, but also promotes critical thinking.
Demonstrations are conducted in the well-equipped laboratories by the subject experts. It is also ensured that adequate time for practice and return demonstration is provided so that they master the required skills before it is practised in the clinical setting.
As this method provides active student participation and better understanding, it is used frequently especially in the clinical setting by the teachers. Teacher gets the opportunity to explore the hidden talents of the students which in turn motivates them to take the lead role in the learning process.
Projects give the students an opportunity to show case their creativity while applying theoretical knowledge in the practical situation. It also helps them to develop team spirit and gives an opportunity to work towards the attainment of a common goal. It is ensured that at least one project is undertaken by the students of every batch.
This method is employed on a regular basis at this college as nursing is a practice oriented profession. It gives the students a realistic experience in the controlled environment of the class room and gives them confidence to practice in the clinical area.
Seminar and Symposia are conducted on various important topics in the subjects of study to reinforce the learning. Eminent resource persons are invited to deliver guest lectures too.
Students are exposed to panel discussions and given opportunity to form their own panel to conduct discussions on burning topics.
A number of field trips/ educational visits are planned and arranged as per the curricular requirements and learning objectives. It helps them to get firsthand experience in the natural settings.
Clinical practice provides an opportunity for students to gain knowledge and skills needed to care for the patients.
The students are provided with opportunity to gather information from patient, observe and understand the patients’ needs and problems. The teacher directly observes the student’s clinical skills and role model the skills and attitudes essential while caring for their patients. Being a popular method, it is being practised very often in our setting.
Procedure demonstrations are planned individually and in groups in the clinical area. All the students demonstrate various nursing procedures in the hospital wards under the supervision of the teachers to enhance the clinical skills.
Much emphasis is given for direct patient care activities during the clinical practice. Keeping this in mind students are allotted individual patients for direct care under the supervision of teachers. The students write care plans, nursing care studies and case presentations as a part of this exercise.
The teachers conduct nursing rounds that provide opportunity for the students to observe patients with varied disease conditions, review assessment data, discuss interventions and the effectiveness of care and make relevant changes in the plan of care. During the rounds, they also examine issues facing the patients and help them to resolve the same.
In addition to the regular planned clinical teaching programme, the teachers also impart incidental teaching based on the identified needs of the students from time to time.
